<<<<< previous blog next blog >>>>> album containing this post's photoI like to lead an analytical and purposeful life, rather than a reactionary and impulsive one. On Nov 6th 2024 I find myself flailing.
I talk a good game, but I never really thought through the reality of another Trump presidency. Even over the last few weeks as I felt he was certainly going to win, I never spent time thinking "what now?". And here we are, not just post-truth this time, but really post democracy. Post United States. Post rule of law. Anti people-like-Jon. I need to deal with that, and I don't know how.
I need to..... something.....
- I need to not dwell on it and have it inserted into every conversation. I need to have it not shit on my happiness, and perhaps the best way to do that is simple refusal. Maybe.... somehow.... just refuse to think about it. Given the level of hatred and violence and lies, that seems rather heartless though.
- I need some comfort food. I need a proper soulful meal to sink into before the real despair needs to be wrestled with. I'm thinking a hearty lasagna. Or a dish from my childhood like chili and rice. We fall back on our core skills in times like these. Perhaps I can cook my way through the whole revolution and just smile through the darkness.
- One of the great tools of Greek Stoicism is "practice what you fear". I was lazy and didn't do that in the run-up to the election. I need to do it now. Think through all the fascist plans for people like me, and how I'll still live happily. Think through some solution for watching as people are abused and persecuted for race, gender, sexuality, poverty. Somehow..... somehow make it not kill my happiness. Somehow....
- I need to be with you all. My fellow hippies. My fellow "woke" liberals. My fellow socialists. My fellow intellectuals. May we all cope together, in peace and love, in kindness, in dreams of a better future.
In the meantime maybe we can argue about less revolutionary things. Let the copium flow. I'll start - Best movies according to Jon. Prove me wrong. :
Near Dark
13th Warrior
Time Bandits
Buckaroo Banzai
The Matrix
The Avengers
Animal House
Blade Runner
Children of Men
The Terminator
The Road Warrior
Escape from New York
Inception
The Big Lebowski
Now if you'll excuse me I need to put on my blinders and shop for lasagna ingredients.
