When comfort food fails

"Sharing food with another human being is an intimate act that should not be indulged in lightly." - M. F. K. Fisher

Sad news. My beloved craft beer bar Waypoint Public is closing for good. Not surprising, as it always had a very social and close quarters vibe. Communal tables, "bring the kids" section. None of that plays well with social distancing. But...... It's one of the reasons I moved to North Park in the first place. And I have many happy memories.

One of the last meals I had with Dad before he died was there. We did a special event chef's tasting menu. We went to plenty of bars while he was here, but he said that one was his favorite. He liked the family focus they had with the play area and children's movies. I remember realizing there that one of the craft beers I can hardly drink, imperial IPAs, were the ones he liked most. He said they reminded him of Berlin after the war.

I remember going there with Marilee. That was back when the Top Chef chef was running the kitchen and turning out food that was insanely good for a bar. They had lots of vegetarian stuff on the menu, but she picked the octopus. It came out as basically just a huge charred tentacle on a plate. And it was damn good. Easily the best octopus I've ever eaten.

I remember discovering the Hawaiian dish loco moco there. That's some great comfort food for sure. I will miss it. The delightful decor, the roll-up windows, the great tap list.

Today's photo is the comfort food I used to try and get through the current war on Science which Mad King Donald is waging. Homemade chili cheese fries. It was damn good. But not enough to bring the comfort in these insane times.
